The McKinsey 7-S Framework
A holistic approach to harmonizing all parts of the organization
The McKinsey 7-S Framework is a business model developed by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman of McKinsey & Company. Since its introduction, the framework has been widely used by academics and practitioners and remains one of the most popular strategic planning tools.
The 7-S framework is used to evaluate organizational alignment and effectiveness. It identifies seven internal, interrelated organizational elements: Shared Vision, Strategy, Structure, Systems, Style, Staff, and Skills. All these elements need to be aligned and mutually reinforcing for the organization or project to be successful.
This holistic framework can be used to gain deep insights into your organization and leverage it to maximize efficiency and profitability. It can also be used in a wide variety of situations where an alignment perspective is useful. Besides the organization, the McKinsey 7-S framework can be applied to elements of a team or a project as well.
