Finding and adopting best-in-class practices for superior performance.

Benchmarking for Superior Performance

What is Benchmarking?

Benchmarking is the process of continually searching for the best methods, practices and processes, and either adopting or adapting their good features and implementing them to become the “best of the best.”
To become the best-in-class, organizations need to implement the right processes to get there.

Benefits of Benchmarking

There are many case studies of organizations that have significantly increased their competitiveness through benchmarking.
One of the best known success stories was that of Xerox. When faced with severe threats of Japanese competitors who were making better copiers and selling them for less in the 70's and 80's, Xerox developed and implemented a benchmarking methodology that turned the organization around and restore its leadership position in the market.

"You can't manage what you don't measure."

The Ostrich Problem
Are you experiencing the "Ostrich Problem" in your organization?
According to Dr Christian Jarrett, psychologist and author of "The Rough Guide to Psychology", the "Ostrich Problem" refers to “the widespread tendency for people to avoid information about progress towards their goals.”

Burying your heads in the sand in the face of fierce competition or when you are not meeting your targets is not going to make the problem go away.
Instead, organizations need to measure their critical business processes or functional activities, e.g. number of customer complaints, number of billing errors, etc. followed by a systematic approach to improve on the relevant metrics.
The world-renowned Xerox benchmarking methodology can help your organization to close the gaps and possibly surpass the competition in the medium to long term.
The rigorous 4-phase, 10-step process guides you from finding to implementing the best practices relevant to your process or functional areas to achieve superior performance.

The Xerox Benchmarking Process

The Xerox benchmarking process consists of four phases and ten steps as illustrated below.
